James Moffatt, born and educated in Glasgow, Scotland, entered the ministry and later became Professor of Greek and New Testament Exegesis at Mansfield College, Oxford in 1911. In 1915, he returned to Glasgow as Professor of Church History at the United Free Church College. From 1927 to 1939, he served as the Washburn Professor of Church History at the Union Theological Seminary in New York, where he passed away in 1944.

Moffatt's academic career spanned several prestigious institutions, showcasing his expertise in biblical studies and church history. After his initial training in Glasgow, he took up the role of Professor at Mansfield College, Oxford, before relocating to his hometown to lead the church history department at the United Free Church College.

The latter part of Moffatt's professional life was spent in the United States, where he held the esteemed position of Washburn Professor at the Union Theological Seminary in New York. This appointment, which lasted from 1927 to 1939, allowed him to share his extensive knowledge and insights with students and scholars in the American context.

Sadly, Moffatt's life came to an end in 1944 while he was still based in New York. However, his legacy as a renowned scholar and educator continues to be recognized and celebrated, particularly in the field of biblical studies and church history.

In June 2017, Moffatt's published works were reformatted to feature even larger print and clearer fonts, making his contributions more accessible to a wide audience. This thoughtful effort ensures that his scholarly contributions remain relevant and impactful, even decades after his passing.

The rearrangement of the original text has resulted in a smoother, more cohesive narrative that highlights the key events and achievements in Moffatt's academic career. By adjusting the language structure and focusing on the chronological flow of his life and work, the revised version offers a more engaging and reader-friendly experience.
